Yuvraj Singh Dropped from Test series with Australia

Yuvraj Singh has been dropped for next month's Test series against Australia with Cheteshwar Pujara, the Saurashtra batsman who has been scoring heavily in domestic and other first-class cricket, replacing him. The selectors, who met in Chennai on Monday, made one more unexpected decision in dropping Karnataka seamer Abhimanyu Mithun, who impressed the team management in Sri Lanka in the absence of Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth.
Zaheer and Sreesanth both made comebacks from injury, along with Harbhajan Singh and Gautam Gambhir. All four missed India's series-levelling win at the P Sara Oval last month. Zaheer and Harbhajan were part of Mumbai Indians' unsuccessful campaign in the Champions League T20 in South Africa. Gambhir and Sreesanth began their return in the Corporate Trophy and will continue it in the three-day game between the Board President's XI and the Australians, starting September 25 in Chandigarh.
Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of selectors, said "everything - form, fitness" was considered while picking the squad. On Pujara's selection, he said, "He has done well in the last two domestic seasons, and on sheer weight of performance he has muscled his way in. All cricket - domestic, A tours, international - was given weightage."
It was indeed getting increasingly difficult to ignore Pujara, a run-machine in domestic cricket. He first caught headlines in 2006-07, when he scored 600 first-class runs at an average of 50. It was just the beginning of the Pujara story: he went on to pile up centuries in the next three first-class seasons, averaging 53.35, 65.56 and 82.33. The A tour of England earlier this year, when he scored an unbeaten double-century, perhaps sealed the deal. He will be playing the tour game against the Australians to try and convince the selectors they have made the right call.
Yuvraj, meanwhile, has been asked to lead the Rest of India side in the Irani Cup clash against Mumbai, which starts the same day as the first Test against Australia.
His last Test assignment summed up the kind of unfortunate year he has had. After being dropped for the Asia Cup, his first limited-overs axing since he became a regular in the early 2000s, he made a satisfactory comeback to the Test side in Sri Lanka. He scored a century in the tour game even as others struggled, and then went onto score a fifty in the first Test. Before the second Test, he came down with fever, and Suresh Raina made full use of the opportunity, scoring a match-saving century, and keeping the place for the final Test. From the sidelines, amid water-boy chants, he saw India level the series. The lacklustre tri-series that followed in Sri Lanka didn't help Yuvraj's case.
It is clear now that Raina is the preferred No. 6 batsman in the Indian line-up and, had Yuvraj been in the squad, there was a good chance he would be sitting out the first Test in Mohali. It is reliably learnt that the selectors agreed Yuvraj needed to spend more time in the middle rather than on the Indian bench, an experience that would be of greater benefit to a more inexperienced batsman like Pujara. Yuvraj's match practice will, they hope, turn his form around in time for the one-day series against Australia that follows the two Tests.
One selector said Yuvraj would be India's "trump card" at the World Cup and the team needed him to be at his best in February. It is not known whether any of the selectors, team management or captain Dhoni had informed Yuvraj about their plan in advance.
India squad MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara, M Vijay, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Sreesanth and Amit Mishra
Rest of India squad Yuvraj Singh (capt.), Abhinav Mukund, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, S Badrinath, Saurabh Tiwary, Parthiv Patel (wk), Piyush Chawla, R Ashwin, Jaydev Unadkat, Umesh Yadav, R Vinay Kumar, Manish Pandey, Abhimanyu Mithun and Ravindra Jadeja

Pakistan level the series after winning 4th ODI against England

Umar Gul once again found devastating reverse-swing with the old
ball to undermine England's run-chase at Lord's

Pakistan took the one-day series to a decider as they secured a 38-run victory at Lord's with their bowling attack again showing its match-winning qualities, after England's openers had seemingly put their on track to take the series with a 113-run stand. The spinners struck vital blows in the middle-order, then Umar Gul and Shoaib Akhtar became a handful under the floodlights. Earlier, a fearsome late assault from Abdul Razzaq, who hit 40 off his last 10 balls, gave Pakistan a powerful surge.
Under normal circumstances we would now be in for a thrilling end to the season at The Rose Bowl, but this match was played under a horrid atmosphere of legal threats from the England team following Ijaz Butt's extraordinary outburst the day before. Andrew Strauss admitted his team were reluctant participants, but felt the best thing was to complete the series as planned although it took a meeting that stretched into the early hours to decide.
Whatever England's mindset, once the game was on they wanted to be professional and will know a series-clinching victory was there for the taking. They'd been given the ideal platform by Strauss and Steve Davies - which had seemingly nullified Razzaq's innings - but as the floodlights started to take effect on the late-September evening conditions became tougher. However, credit also has to go to Pakistan's bowlers who came back superbly with the spinners proving a handful on a dry surface while Gul was again outstanding.
Strauss flew out of the blocks as Shoaib's first three overs cost 30 and after the initial Powerplay England were 73 without loss with 10 boundaries; in the rest of the innings they only managed another 10. Strauss went to a run-a-ball fifty, his third in a row as he became the second leading run-scorer in ODIs this year, while Davies wasn't far behind until he dragged Saeed Ajmal into his stumps. That wicket brought England to a shuddering halt as Strauss lost the strike and Jonathan Trott, who earlier in the day was involved in an altercation with Wahab Riaz in the nets, struggled to bed in.
The ECB played down the incident between Trott and Riaz, but it was a clear sign of how far the relationship between the two sides has fallen in recent weeks. Trott appeared uneasy in the middle before watching the ball roll back into his stumps from a defensive push against Shahid Afridi. Pakistan didn't try to hide their pleasure at Trott's departure.
They took control a short while later when Strauss fell to his favourite cut shot, picking out backward point perfectly off Shoaib and it left two new batsmen having to settle with the scoring-rate rising. Paul Collingwood, who missed the previous match with a virus, has struggled for most of the season and looked bereft of form before inside-edging Gul into his stumps as England slipped to 149 for 4.
Ian Bell, recalled to the side following his match-winning 107 in the CB40 final on this ground on Saturday, played himself in calmly but having used up 41 balls to reach 27 then drove Ajmal straight to cover. It was down to Eoin Morgan, but he couldn't find anyone to stay with him as Michael Yardy chopped on and Tim Bresnan played all round Gul. England's last chance went when Morgan skied a drive and Mohammad Yousuf, never the sharpest in the field, took a fine running catch at mid-off.
Pakistan's innings had progressed in fits and starts, but was ended in grandstand style by Razzaq who plundered 10 boundaries in the last two overs from James Anderson and Bresnan. Splaying his front leg to drive through the off side during the final Powerplay the quicks couldn't adjust amid the onslaught.
Afridi, playing his 300th ODI, had also supplied his own fireworks and played like a man wanting to make more than a cricketing point. He launched his fourth ball, the last one of Graeme Swann's impressive four-wicket spell, into the second tier of the pavilion and the MCC member who tried to catch it finished with a bloodied face. The Pakistan physio came to his aid, and the member insisted on staying in his seat to watch the remainder of the action. Afridi reached 33 off 16 deliveries at the peak of his assault, but miscued a slower ball from Bresnan to long-on.
The star of England's bowling display was Swann with a wonderful ten overs of offspin. Announced as one of the four candidates for ICC Cricketer of the Year - having been omitted from the original long list in a major blunder - he made his customary first-over breakthrough with a classical offspinner's dismissal as Asad Shafiq was bowled through the gate when he tried to drive. Yet, even the normally jovial Swann couldn't manage his usual expansive celebrations - a sure sign that England would rather not have been playing this match.
Swann added Yousuf, Mohammad Hafeez and Fawad Alam to his haul and Pakistan were fading, but they had power to come and Razzaq's blows proved decisive. However this series, which has included some outstanding one-day cricket, will only be remembered for the wrong reasons. Whoever wins on Wednesday.

Strong Redbacks will face Gayana in Airtel Champions League T20

The South Australian Redbacks have surprised a few teams in South Africa with their superior work ethic and well defined strategy. But now they’ll have to make sure that they aren’t surprised when they take on Guyana on Tuesday. Brimming with confidence, the Redbacks are fresh from their commanding eight-wicket win over RCB and will surely be hoping to cement their No.1 spot in Group B. Having one eye on the semis, the Redbacks will not let the momentum slip and would like their unbeaten run to continue.
Guyana have disappointed and comparisons with T&T’s CLT20 2009 performance are inevitable. Sadly for Guyana, South Africa didn’t turn out to be a happy hunting ground. Ramnaresh Sarwan’s team has an unenviable 100% loss record in the tournament. Confidence and experience are two elements that are lacking in the Guyanese team and their latest nine-wicket mauling at the hands of the Lions is testament to that. With nothing to lose against the Redbacks, the Caribbean T20 champions have the right to play freely and their severely dented pride should give them the added impetus to turn over the Redbacks.
Key players
Shaun Tait proved he can trouble the best during their match against RCB. His wicket of Ross Taylor was the turning point. With his extreme pace and deadly Yorkers, Tait is a weapon that most teams dream of possessing. Combine that with Guyana’s aversion to the short stuff and you’ve got a real ace who most definitely ruffle a few Guyanese feathers.
CLT20 is proving to be too hot for Guyana as none of their players have really impressed. But in adversity there is always an opportunity and youngster Steven Jacobs would do well to redeem his team’s image. He did that to some extent against the Lions with a fighting knock of 34, but it will require a lot more perseverance from the 22-year-old to make a telling impact against the Redbacks.

Highveld Lions taking Royal Challengers Bangalore in Champions league T20

Highevld Lions put on a clinical performance in their last game against Guyana. Captain Alviro Petersen once again led from the front, but with Richard Cameron also coming good with the bat, the Lions are spoilt for batting options should McKenzie be fit for this game.  The bowling too, with Ethan O’Reilly and Aaron Phangiso bowling incisive spells, looks at its potent best.
Royal Challengers Bangalore should have won the game against Mumbai Indians the other night. They were the better team for most part of that match but lost the plot when it mattered most.  The advantage they have when they play the local Lions is that in Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn they have two South African stars who would be familiar with the opposition. RCB would do well to use their experience on the night to come out trumps.

What the two teams need to do to qualify
Both sides have currently played three games apiece with RCB (1 win) enjoying the higher net run-rate at +0.852. The Lions have won two matches and are better placed in the points tally (4 points to RCB’s 2) but have a poorer net run-rate (+0.716) compared to the Bangalore club.
In that context, if the Lions beat Royal Challengers Bangalore or there is a game with no result or a tie, the Lions will qualify along with the Redbacks from Group B. However, if Royal Challengers Bangalore beat the Lions, they will finish second in the group as it is not possible for them to beat the Lions and fall behind the Lions on the net run-rate. So whoever wins the Lions v Royal Challengers Bangalore match will advance to the semis along with Redbacks.

Key players
Richard Cameron blazed his way to a knock of 78 runs in just 42 balls in the game against Guyana. The dashing right-hand batsman heaped misery on the Guyana bowlers hitting them for five 4s and six 6s. Should he repeat his performance in the game against RCB, the result of the match will most certainly go in the Lions’ favour.
Praveen Kumar bowled exceptionally well against Mumbai Indians, his four overs costing the team only 26 runs. He also had Sachin Tendulkar caught behind by Robin Uthappa off a superb piece of seam bowling. Kumar’s economy-rate for the tournament has been a mere 6.33 runs per over and with bowling under lights always favouring bowlers in South Africa, Kumar could be a dangerous proposition for the Lions’ batting line-up on the night.
